Wild Edibles
I was amused as one of my friends looked at my bowl of greens for potluck and ask me if it was weeds from my yard. Yes, I do use wild edible weeds as it were and grow some like dock in my yard. Dock is one of those wild edibles that makes great greens almost year round.

The funny thing about learning about wild plants is that what you once pulled as a week you now plant in pots and eat. So this year I have been busy working on planting purslane which I knew very little about until last year. Because of it’s high Omega 3 content I have taken to eating it and putting it in my smoothies on a regular basis. There are all kinds of other benefits to this drought hardy little yellow flowered plant. It is nutrient dense and high in trace minerals, it also helps to detoxify the body.
Dandelion grows really well in my yard but it is one of those things I underutilized. I find it hard to eat the leaves unless small and grown in shade. I have tried the roots as tea, which works better for me if I add things to them.
Berries are probably close to my favorite wild edibles. Anyone who has hiked in the high country and eaten the tiny alpine strawberries will tell you they make the cultivated type taste bland. They are amazing and packed with nutrients. Blueberries and huckleberries are also pretty wonderful though I have never picked blueberries wild. There are a number of different types of blackberries that grow wild on the Oregon coast where I grew up and they are all loaded with nutrients, antioxidants, phytochemicals, and fiber. We ate lots of them as kids. Blackberry picking is on my list today in fact because it is that season.
I have eaten the little violet that that grows in my law and flower garden. These little beauties are also wonderful for decorating and chocolate.
There are numerous wild edibles that you can grow in your garden. So try something new and enjoy a wild food adventure.
